Common Types of Dog Collars
When it comes time to get your best friend a collar, with so many options out there, how do you choose the best one? Should you choose a collar that is meant to help train your dog? Do you want to pick a collar just for the use of holding your dog’s identification tags, and use a harness when you walk? Or, should you choose a collar that prevents your dog from slipping it’s head out?
In today’s blog post, we are going to discuss some of the most popular types of dog collars, when they are best used, and whether or not training collars can cause injury to your dog. The Flat Collar
The flat dog collar is the most common type of dog collar. They are typically made from nylon and can come in a variety of colors. Flat collars have a buckle with a quick-release snap as well as a ring to hold identification tags and attach the dog’s leash.
At Klik Belts, we make some of the world’s strongest flat dog collars. We use the same mil-spec nylon that we use on our Klik Belts to create a collar that is strong yet comfortable. Our dog collars are also easily adjustable and equipped with an authentic Cobra® buckle just as our belts are. This buckle adds to the strength and durability of the collar. Shop our 1-inch dog collars today in our On-Duty or Off-Duty colors. And, for those who have larger dogs, consider our 1.5-inch extra-large Klik Collar.
The Head Collar
The head collar works similarly to a horse’s halter. It contains two straps. One fits high around the dog’s neck just behind the ears while the other strap fits around the dog’s muzzle. This type of collar is ideal for dogs who are energetic and pull and jump. Since the leash attaches to a loop located on the strap around the dog’s muzzle, they don’t have the proper leverage to pull with all of their strength.
The Choke Chain
The choke chain is a collar that is used for training dogs who pull. It is made of metal links and as the dog pulls, the chain tightens around their neck. While this is a popular type of collar, there is no way to control how much the collar tightens, so it can cause injuries to your dog’s trachea, esophagus, neck sprains, nerve damage, and, in severe cases, even death.
The Prong Collar
The prong collar is another popular dog collar that is designed to help train dogs, although it can also injure your dog and is not necessarily ideal. This collar consists of a series of metal links with prongs. When your dog pulls, the prongs pinch the loose skin on your dog’s neck. This type of collar can be especially dangerous if the collar is not the appropriate size for the dog or if it is not fitted correctly.
The Martingale Collar
The Martingale Collar is a type of collar that is designed for dogs with smaller heads who tend to slip their collars. Although it’s most commonly used for Greyhounds, this collar can help reduce any dog’s ability to slip their head out of their collar. If your dog tries to slip a Martingale Collar, it actually tightens around their neck. When this type of collar is properly fitted and adjusted, it will not choke or cause injury to your dog.
The Harness
While the harness is not quite a collar, it did still make this list because of its popularity and effectiveness. Harnesses are a great choice to help train dogs that pull or jump. The harness wraps around the dog’s entire chest, so even dogs who pull frequently will be less likely to experience a neck injury.
At Klik Belts, we offer our Julius K9 Harness. It’s a no-pull harness designed for working dogs, but it’s so comfortable that your dog can wear it all day. As with all of our products from Klik Belts, our K9 harness is also equipped with a strong and durable Cobra® buckle. This soft, padded harness will protect your dog from choking when they pull and pairs perfectly with our Klik Collars and Klik Dog Leashes.
